Day 889 - The Angels Take Manhatten

I'm starting to really hate any kind of endings. And today saw another one as Amy and Rory left the series.

They were actually in the series for quite a long time when compared to some of the previous companions, making it through two and half seasons. A departure mid way through a season is also something fairly new in the modern show.

This episode is a bit of a mixed bag for me. The plot seems to be a bit loose. The Angels are in New York and have taken over a building to effectively use it as a farm by capturing humans and sending them back through time, keeping them trapped in the building until thet eventually die.

Theres quite a neat idea when Amy starts to read a book, only to realise that these events are actually happening. The book has been written by River Song in the past and so it contains everything that will happen during this episode. Amy wants to read ahead but the Doctor tells her that if she reads ahead then those events become fact and must always happen that way. It's fun when the series plays with time travel in this way.

As it's Rory's last episode as well then it seem natural that he should die, yet again! He is zapped back in time and the younger Amy and Rory witness the older Rory dying. He has had to live his whole life alone, without Amy. To try to prevent this, Rory wants to create a paradox which will destroy the Angels by jumping off the roof of the building and killing himself before the Angels can reach him. Amy won't let him jump alone so she steps out onto the roof ledge with him.

Now I didn't for one moment think that Amy and Rory would actually die but even so, seeing them on the edge like that, and then ultimately jumping hand in hand was pretty emotional. This is combined with some excellent music from Murry Gold. I don't really think I've talked about music in the show very often but it's always impressive and as Amy and Rory fall in slow motion to soaring music I must admit to shedding a tear.

The paradox works and everyone pops back to where they should be but there is a sting in the tail as one more Angel attacks Rory and sends him back in time whilst they are all stood in a graveyard. Amy sees Rory's name is now on a gravestone showing that he died in his 80s. Given that we now know that this cannot be changed as she has seen it in writing and the Doctor tells her that the TARDIS can no longer return to that time period in New York due to the damage caused by the paradox then we know that Rory is lost forever. There is just one heart breaking decision for Amy to make as she ultimately choices her husband over the Doctor and allows the Angel to take her too, depiste the Doctor's desperate pleas to stay with him. Both names now appear of the grave stone and Amy is gone for good.

One strange thing about this episode that always confuses me is that it seems to imply that the Statue Of Liberty is a Weeping Angel...how is that possible? It manages to move across New York to the building where Rory and Amy are. Now given that the Angels can only move when no one is looking then are we to assume that no one see the Statue Of Liberty marching through the streets of New York?? Makes no sense at all.

There was also one moment early on in the episode that resonated with me. As the Doctor reads a book whilst sat in the park with Amy and Rory, he tears out the last page. He says he always tears out the last page of any book he is reading becuase he hates endings and this way the story never has to end. As Day 900 quickly appraches I can fully appreciate his feelings on this matter.
